Erin Fetherston Fills Us In On Runway Mishaps, Muses, & Music
Yesterday Erin Fetherston presented her fall Erin by Erin Fetherston collection, and we popped by backstage to chat with the designer. She told us all about her inspiration for the season, which is chock full of sequined party dresses, printed maxidresses, and plenty of draping.
What’s the inspiration for this collection?
For this season, I was really inspired by images from nature, but I kind of wanted to take it with a twist. I actually discovered the work of this really brilliant photographer named Barry Underwood. He was doing all these natural landscape pictures, but he would put neon lighting in them. So for example, he would put like green neon lights under the root system of a really old tree, and then take a panoramic shot. I love that tension of looking at things that were totally organic but also had something really modern, that electric quality to them, so I’ve tried to really capture that tension between organic and electric in the clothes. I think it comes through very much in the print story, the color story, in the different textures in the collection.
Do you listen to music while you work?
If I’m really designing and working, I actually like more classical music. Even today we’re going to have a harpist play at the presentation, which I’m really excited about. I heard her playing on the harp before, it was so lovely.
What’s the most difficult thing you’ve had to deal with during Fashion Week?
In a runway show, there’s a very specific order. We once had a mishap where the wrong model went down, and it just created chaos. We ended up having 13 looks out of order, and we agonize over the order of the show! We’re staying up until 5 in the morning trying to perfect the order! And then to have 13 models out of probably 33 be out of order is just crazy. It’s all happening so fast. I just remember realizing what was happening, and kind of like throwing my body to stop the next model form going out. The finale gown is about to go out before my bathing suit look — it would have been really disastrous. That was the worst.
How are you going to unwind after all of the runway show craziness?
Next week I’m going to Hawaii with my boyfriend, so I’m really looking forward to having a little vacation.
Who do you see as the ultimate Erin Fetherston girl?
Zooey Deschanel always comes to mind as a muse. I’ve always loved her, and I’ve been lucky enough to do a lot of special projects with her and dress her. She’s actually going to be wearing one of my dresses tonight as she hosts Saturday Night Live!
Do you watch New Girl?
I think it’s brilliant! It’s wonderful, and I think it’s so much fun. I couldn’t be more thrilled for her.
