One of the great things about covering lesser-known designers at fashion week is the chance to see firsthand some of the untapped talent popping up in the industry. Case in point: Falguni & Shane Peacock, whose show we caught earlier this week.
We weren’t really sure what we were getting into as we shuffled through the dimly lit and overcrowded space at Lincoln Center, but quickly realized we were in for something good as an exhilarating light show and intense space-age music kicked things off.
It was theatrical, sure, but having Fern Mallis in the front row is always a good sign. (Just down the row we saw Ashanti and Michelle Williams, which only served to remind us how much we miss Destiny’s Child.)
But back to the collection: we were right. The collection was a whirlwind of gorgeous gowns, thigh-high cocktail dresses and edgy ensembles that conjured up images of royalty from a futuristic society. Models were adorned with forehead paint and face jewels, and wore their hair in slicked back, waist-length ponytails. The design duo’s practice of mixing fantasy with reality really shined through via the garments’ geometrical construction and eye-catching embellishments -– think gold beading, velvet appliqué and black feather detailing.
We think it’s safe to say Falguni & Shane Peacock are ones to watch.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
