LFW: Nasir Mazhar’s Colorful Case for Model Diversity
12 days of looking at tall, skinny, Caucasian 20-year-olds can not just mess with your own self-esteem but skew your perception of the human population in general. Luckily you can always count on accessories maverick Nasir Mazhar to pump a little diversity into Fashion Month’s notoriously bland model lineups.
The girls Mazhar dressed in his Spring 2014 collection represented a range of ethnicities and sizes. Again focusing on the intersection of fashion and music, he cast Tokyo-based American model Kiko Mizuhara alongside DJ Mademoiselle Yulia, Korean-American musician Yoon and photographer/designer Alis Pelleschi.
The outfits are a bit like the rebellious teenage love-children of Tumblr and a Chola rave, and not the sort of things we currently have in our own wardrobe, but we love that no one looks bored or sad. So far at fashion week we’ve seen skipping finales, live performances and even male ballerinas, but those things pale in comparison to models who somehow make taking selfies and threatening to twerk seem perfectly appropriate.
