Look, we love Daria as much as the next ladyblogger who came of age in the ’90s, but our fangirl flame doesn’t hold a candle to the love Marc Jacobs must be feeling. For his Marc by Marc Jacobs fall collection, the designer walked a veritable army of lookalikes down the runway, complete with combat boots, pleated skirts, and boxy jackets. Did we mention they were also wearing glasses?
Jacobs made his mark by ushering in the age of grunge at Perry Ellis in the ’90s, and perhaps he’s feeling nostalgic. Or perhaps he was just feeling a little sick of the ankle-strapped, pointy toed stilettos and body-conscious illusion dresses that have taken over the runway. We sure are. But was his square-silhouetted and flat-footed collection the answer?
When viewed as a whole, the lines and cuts — no matter how exquisitely tailored — that walked Jacobs’ runway aren’t flattering on anyone over the age of five. But as separate components, the collection was made up of not only our favorite things, but also a set of much needed counterpoints to the uber-femme, glamazon styling we’ve seen for the last three seasons.
Here’s to fall sidewalks filled with glasses, red lipstick, badass flat boots, structured jackets, and statement skirts.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
