Gail Simmons Just Wanted To Hear Ryan Lochte Talk At The Milly Show
As much as fashion shows are allegedly about the clothing, sometimes the front row takes center stage. Case in point: at yesterday afternoon’s Milly by Michelle Smith spring 2013 show, Ryan Lochte was all everyone could talk about and look at. While the Olympian wasn’t doing interviews like at previous shows, he was taking pictures with fashion folk and adoring fans. Do we even have to point out that we shamelessly snapped a photo with him? Because yeah, that happened.
Once everyone was sitting cozy in their seats, the real show started, and Smith sent out athletic, futuristic, and almost Tron-like looks down the runway. Among our favorites are the slouchy knits, mesh tops layered over what appeared to be sports bras, opalescent and sheer track jackets, pencil skirts with colorblocked panels, body-hugging frocks with contrasting trims, and cool laser-cut leather jackets. The models were also accessorized with clear eyewear that looked an awful lot like Kate Middleton‘s protective glasses during her trip to the Rolls Royce factory in Singapore. It’s the Kate Middleton effect!
All in all, it was a successful departure from Smith’s usual ladylike aesthetic, and Food & Wine‘s Gail Simmons told us after the show that she’d wear separates from the collection, especially the mesh tops, but only “strategically”. Her favorite pieces were the leather jackets, and we totally agreed — those are some badass toppers. She also laughed about being a celebrity in the front row: “No one ever bothers me! All the media leave me alone, I’m kind of a nobody.” That was obviously inaccurate, as we were brainstorming questions for for her throughout the entire show. As our friends at The Braiser know, we’d pick Gail over Tinsley Mortimer any day.
Simmons had her eyes glued to the runway during the show, but she admitted she was anxious for Lochte to talk before it started. “I was waiting for him to open his mouth, I really wanted to listen to him talk,” she said. “He cracks me up,” and winked. We nodded knowingly.
