Really, Really Ridiculously Good-Looking Guy Taking Over At Balmain

Earlier today, the house of Balmain officially announced that designer Olivier Rousteing would be taking over Christophe Decarnin‘s old job as creative director. In a press release, Balmain touted the newly promoted Rousteing’s talents and resume: He graduated from the École Supérieure Des Arts Et Techniques De La Mode in Paris in 2003, then spent about five years with Roberto Cavalli before landing a gig as head of Balmain’s women’s wear design studio in 2009. What they failed to mention is that he is smoking hot.

Not that that affects his ability to do his job or anything — his credentials would suggest that he’s a talented designer, albeit one who happens to look about ten years younger than he really is (we’re guessing about 30, based on when he graduated from school) and who is smoking hot.

Again, we’re sure that Rousteing’s good looks aren’t the reason he got the job, but we’re not going to sit here and pretend they didn’t help. Study after study has been done to confirm that good-looking people tend to advance faster in the workplace and are even perceived to be more competent than their less good-looking counterparts. In addition to that, Rousteing’s indeterminate racial origin could help with Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin’s plan for the company to grow internationally. And maybe, considering the rather spectacular manner in which Decarnin left the company, having someone who looks like he’s more put together in the driver’s seat might assuage the public’s doubts about Rousteing’s physical and mental capacity to do the job. His look is a far cry from Decarnin’s penchant for long, stringy hair and lots of stubble.

But at the end of the day, we don’t really know a lot about Rousteing, other than the fact that he’s smoking hot. So it’ll be a while before we can tell just what kind of creative director he’s going to be.
