FLASH FASHION: Ralph Lauren Brings Out The Western Guns

In case you didn’t know, this was Styleite’s very first fashion week. Though it already feels forever ago, we only launched in late March — and as proud as we are of ourselves, we couldn’t help but look at our show invites as a form of validation. While there will be more on that later (namely, a detailed rundown on what it’s really like to wrangle invites and wrestle your way through Mercedes Benz Fashion Week as relative unknowns), we have to say: getting an invite to the Ralph Lauren Collection show felt like a gold star on our fashion week report card.

The Ralph Lauren invite, unlike a lot our others, appeared on our desk without fanfare, without back-and-forth emails with publicists, and without begging, tears, or calling in favors. This should have prepared us for the civility of the show.

We arrived Thursday AM in a panic — our cab had gotten stuck in traffic, and what if we missed the show! — but the crowd of well-heeled fashion insiders mingling outside the Skylight Studios venue put us immediately at ease. Check-in was painless and Bill Cunningham was there! (We’re not going to lie, we totally lingered in the hopes of catching his attention. Sadly, we didnt.)

The room itself was small and elegantly designed. There were chandeliers, four tiers of seating, and nary a celebrity to be seen. Grace Coddington sat quietly by herself, while Graydon Carter and Patrick Demarchelier chatted amiably, interrupted only once by Cunningham’s flash.

It was a strange feeling, knowing that of all the shows, this was the one with the easiest and least crowded access to fashion’s most bold-faced names, but at the same time feeling like somehow, in this venue, pestering Carine Roitfeld with our questions would have been decidedly frowned upon. It was almost as if everyone was actually only there for the clothes. Crazy, right?

(Though, there was one little storm in this sea of tranquility: namely, the pink-haired fashionisto and his ladyfriend down the row from us who stole someone’s seat and refused to get up. And in case you thought they were all witty quips and clever snark, the Fug Girls also have impeccable manners. They gave up their seat instead.)

The clothes were decidedly and unapologetically Western, with plenty of prairie white, leather belts, embellished chokers, and tons of fringe, suede, and Annie Get Your Gun-esque layering. While some of it bordered on costume, the most exquisitely styled looks were Lauren’s shimmering gold and pink toned gowns, which he paired with low-slung and big-buckled belts for a wonderfully successful boho-glam juxtaposition.
