Update: We reported earlier that Rodarte would be designing the costumes for the film, Black Swan. It has been brought to our attention that the Mulleavy sisters will be designing the costumes for the Swan Lake Ballet portion in Black Swan, not for the entire film.
Laura and Kate Mulleavy, the sisters behind the brilliant Rodarte line, have always expressed their interest and love of films, particularly those in the horror genre.
According to WWD, their movie dreams are finally coming true. And no, this is not one of those designers-turned-actresses type of deal. The Mulleavy sisters will be designing the costumes for Black Swan, a ballet drama starring Natalie Portman (a Rodarte fan herself) and Mila Kunis and directed by Darren Aronofsky.
From IMDB’s synopsis of Black Swan:
“A young ballarina, Nina, finally finds success in the ballet world, but is soon faced with a rival ballarina, who looks just like her. The rival, while looking quite like her, is completely different in every respect in terms of personality. Nina is very shy and insecure, while Lily is extremely confident and outgoing. Nina begins to realize that her new found success is now in jeopardy due to Lily’s natural talent. How far will Nina go to remain on top?”
(Not to insult Aronofsky or anything, but: I Know Who Killed Me starring Lindsay Lohan, anyone?)
Costume design seems like the perfect project for the sisters whose runway shows seem like performances in their own right. And while details of the costumes have not yet been released, we can’t wait for a thoughtfully tattered tutu and hopefully some insanely creative play on a toe shoe.
