Sudanese Models Arrested After Sharing A Mixed Runway

With too many international editions to count, America’s Next Top Model has inspired people all over the world to reach for their runway dreams. On occasion, contestants get arrested, but we’ve never seen a whole group of supermodel wannabes thrown in the clink.

Never, at least, until last week, when police in Khartoum briefly detained over 20 models, makeup artists and designers after the Sudan’s Next Top Model Fashion Show, the country’s first mixed-gender fashion show. (We should point out here that we can’t tell if the name was properly licensed, and that we’ve never heard of Sudan’s Next Top Model as a Tyra Banks-sanctioned television experience.)

Participants told Reuters that Sudan’s public order police corralled them after the show. The news service wrote that this police force is known for its “crackdowns on indecent dress and drinking in the Muslim north.” Though police were unavailable for comment, we’re going to hazard the guess that unrelated men and women commingling on a runway — or anywhere for that matter — probably wasn’t going to fly with these guys, either.

One participant told Reuters:

“There was nothing bad about the clothes. There were wedding dresses, traditional Sudanese clothes, suits, clothes from local shops and tobs (traditional Sudanese wraparound dresses).”

All of those arrested in connection to the show were released on Friday, but as many as six were told to report back to the police on Sunday to face unspecified charges.
