Tom Ford Is Putting Movies On Hold To Make You More Handbags

Steezy Texan designer Tom Ford has unveiled his spring collection exclusively to his buddies at Vogue magazine, and in talking about it with them he revealed that all of his movie making aspirations are currently on the back burner.

Ford, who made waves when he directed the Oscar-nominated A Single Man in 2009, explained that for right now, he’s more interested in fashion than he is in film. So what of all those rumors about him working on a comedy?

“Well, moviemaking has gone away in favor of bag-making,” he said, and laughed.

The bags in his spring collection are python sacks of varying sizes strung like talismans on chain straps, or marbled minaudieres. He’s still presenting them, and the clothes, in private presentations where he walks select editors (meaning no one who works at Styleite) through the collection by explaining it to them himself. Who needs a fast-paced runway show when a designer will tell you what to think of his clothes with his own two lips?

“I’ve streamlined things more this season. I think I’m very classic, because what I do is always based on something you’ve seen before. And yes, maybe there’s something YSL about it. When I left off designing for women, I was at YSL so I’m working through that to be me, asking myself, What do I like? What defines your brand?”

For right now, the brand is a lot of prints and a skin-tight pants and blousy tops nipped in at the waist. Good pieces, but certainly not the most cohesive collection that Ford has ever presented. You can see them all for yourself here.
