Mean Girls Rain On Victoria Beckham’s Fashion Week Parade

While we didn’t score an invite to Victoria Beckham‘s Fashion Week presentation, Robin Givhan did. And in her words, “it wasn’t pretty.” But she wasn’t talking about the clothes.

Though many still think of Victoria as either a) Posh Spice or b) David Beckham’s wife, she’s been working hard to gain respect as a legitimate designer. On the whole, her collections have been well-received — she’s even considering relocating to New York so she can be closer to the industry. However, not everyone is rooting for the former pop star to succeed.

Victoria showed off her fall 2011 collection at a small presentation attended by all sorts of important editors on Sunday. Givhan called the collection “lovely,” and noted that Victoria “seemed a bit nervous.” You see, she literally presented the collection, describing each piece as it made its way down the runway — “and the cool girls turned on her.”

Explained Givhan:

But if one might have thought the audience would have been encouraging and well, equally mature… you would be so terribly wrong. There were muffled giggles, knowing glances, and plenty of eye-rolling over the non-stop narration. Certainly, Beckham’s chatter was a throwback to a 1950s fashion industry. But that was her point—to make the presentation more personal and without the hype of the modern business.

Woman-on-woman cattiness? That’s pretty much the opposite of girl power. Check out some of the looks from Victoria Beckham’s fall 2011 collection below. Do you think she was deserving of such a response?

She’s got Beckham and oodles of money, so why should she care about a few low-class twits in the audience?

There are very few celebrity designers who cross over to become true designers, and I think Victoria Beckham is getting there. I like that she tried to make the modern runway experience feel more personal, though she is going to have to overcome the celebrity label before she’s truly respected in the fashion industry. She should just keep working and her talent and love of fashion will win out.

These are really beautiful! Most of the time, it seems designers go for shock value, not the beauty or effect. Beck ham has nailed both here. The catty girls? Go rot, your taste is all in your mouths.

She is feeding into the cattiness of girl on girl cattiness by dressing up as a sex object and her personal choice of career journey. She’s been a celebrity – a feeder off notoriety. Now she wants to be taken “seriously”. Ho-hum. Earn respect like everyone else has to do.

Why would the mean girls even go if they are going to be disrespectful… it’s not like they don’t have a million other shows to choose from. Rude.

Say what you want about her narration.. the collection looks great which is what counts. Go Posh. ;)
