Who Bought Viktor & Rolf’s Couture Collection Before It Even Walked?
13 is considered unlucky for most people. But Viktor & Rolf are definitely not most people. The Dutch purveyors of humor luxe are returning to the couture runways tomorrow after a 13-year absence, and if you were hoping to cast your eyes over the collection before deciding which of the 20 dresses to spend your entire family’s life savings on, your options are now sliced in half. 10 of the dresses have already been bought by an unnamed art collector.
Viktor Horsting and Ralf Snoeren will unveil the outfits tomorrow night, one to celebrate each year they’ve been designing together. But to these guys it’s more about riotous theatrics, or art for art’s sake. “The essence is creativity for the sake of creativity,” Snoeren said to WWD. “We do love a certain mystery which couture provides and which we feel ready-to-wear has lost.”
You could say they’ve had a part in that — barring a few typically ostentatious bows here and there, the duo’s Fall 2013 collection was relatively approachable. Hopefully tomorrow’s treat will be inaccessible in more ways than one.
