Anyone with a fear of clowns knows circuses aren’t all fairy floss and Rainbow Brite poodles. Zimmermann also delved into the darker side of performance for their New York Fashion Week debut, which was delivered at Lincoln Centre this morning.
Designer Nicky Zimmermann and her business-brained sister Simone have been building up a buzz in New York for a while now. They opened their first flagship here last year, which proved so popular they outgrew the Mercer Street space and are sprawling out further down the block this month. And you could sense the anticipation at this morning’s show – both in the audience, which was far more ebullient than fashion people should be before 10am, and in the designers themselves, who ordered the lights dimmed only 20 minutes after the scheduled 9am time slot. Apparently Australians can offer us lessons in efficiency as well as in nonchalantly sexy ways to get dressed.
The first look was a frothy, pink dress that looked like wearable candy. But outfit two immediately undercut the rampant femininity with a voluminous metallic vest and dagger-shaped plunging neckline. The following looks walked the same whimsical/dangerous tightrope, with highlights including gravity-defying skirts that resembled circus tents and gypsy dresses vamped up with bondagey diagonal lines. Typical Zimmermann details included delicate abstract prints, artful cut-outs and an abundance of chiffon-like materials.
Then there was the swimwear, which really had us second-guessing our positivity towards today’s crisp fall weather. Bandage-style tops were mixed with bloomer bottoms, and one set did magical things with what looked like the underwire of a bra. NYC’s beaches might not be as wonderful as Sydney’s, but this collection is sure to strike a chord with locals nonetheless.
