While 26 year old Amy Winehouse is known first for her incredible musical talent, recently, she has been recognized more for her tabloid frenzied lifestyle, run-ins with the law, and dramatic on and off again love affairs. Today, WWD announced that the Back To Black artist has decided to add something new to her resume: Winehouse wants to become a fashion designer.
Winehouse has paired up with British designer Fred Perry to create a 17 piece collection inspired by her own personal style. The singer, who has apparently been a fan of the brand for years, was chosen by the company because of her “unique sense of style that reflects the brand’s own historical reference points,” marketing director Richard Martin told WWD. While there’s certainly concern that Winehouse could blow this project, Fred Perry reps described the singer as “closely involved.”
It seems that the company may be making moves to try to appeal to a younger, more modern demographic by bringing Winehouse on board. For a brand that is known mostly for polo t-shirts and a preppy aesthetic, the Winehouse/Perry collaboration seems a bit odd. After all, Winehouse is known for her skimpy, heroin-chic attire; classy Brit simply is not her appeal. Nevertheless, Winehouse told UK Marie Claire, “‘I’m really excited about doing this collection with Fred Perry. We’ve been working on it for a while and it’s great to see it finally come to fruition.”
Winehouse’s collection will debut in October of 2010.
