The Animal Inside: 6 Feral And Fashionable Pieces Of Jewelry

My best friend is obsessed with elephants, a quality of hers that has led me and most of her other friends to collect virtually everything that has an elephant on it — posters, books, jewelry, mini sculptures, you name it. So after eight years of friendship, you can imagine how many elephants that adds up to. Anytime I come across a pachyderm charm, I’m forced to remind myself that she does not actually need yet another elephant-themed item.

But with safari-chic and tribal styles coming back into style, it’s difficult to ignore the plethora of elephants — and other animals for that matter — that are showing up in prints and on necklaces.

While perusing some of my daily e-commerce stakeouts, the trend hit me like a ton of bricks. Everywhere I looked were little gold animal charms, wraparound snake rings, and other animal jewelry.

Here are six of our favorites:

1. Erica Klein Ram Bangle, $128
Rams aren’t normally a jewelry-celebrated animal and the two ram heads on each end of this bangle have crystal eyes (Swarovski, natch).

2. Judith Leiber Elephant Evening Bag, $5,995
Judith Leiber: the Queen of celebrating animals. It’s difficult to choose which evening bag to highlight because they are all so ornate and, well, animal-themed, but the elephant won us over with its vibrant colors and intricate detailing.

3. Roberto Cavalli Frog Earrings, $625
These silver-tone earrings are part of Cavalli’s Swarovski collaboration and are encrusted in green and clear crystals.

4. Alkemie Jewelry Sting Ray Ring, $155
Love the size of this ring which is about 2 inches long, from one of the sting-ray fins to the other. It’s made of reclaimed-metal and adorned with clear rhinestone eyes.

5. Elizabeth And James Small Snake Bracelet, $125.00
Not only is this coil snake necklace awesome by nature, but it’s one is made of 14-karat rose gold detail and has a pave diamond for an eye.

6. Victoria Wieck Chocolate Pavé “Owl” Ring, $99.95
First of all, we love owls. Second, this ring will get you 1.30 carats of brown diamonds for under $100.
