We haven’t made our love for Target diffusion lines any kind of secret (we even wore the Zac Posen snap dress on New Year’s Eve!), which is why the company’s newest collaboration is, well, kind of disappointing. Calypso St. Barth is the latest label to have teamed up with the mass market retailer.
For those unfamiliar with Calypso, it’s a relatively expensive boho-hippie-chic brand designed for moms who summer in the Hamptons and winter in, well, St. Barth’s. It’s not that the clothes are particularly ugly or offensive — they’re quite nice, in fact — they’re just not particularly interesting. Anyway! The collection they will be releasing for Target on May 1 will include “clothing and accessories for women and children, plus home goods like candles, pillows and glassware.” Items max out at $79.99 — quite a change from their usual price point.
While Target’s Go International collections normally feature up-and-coming designers, their Designer Collaborations alumni include Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier. And now Calypso? Suffice it to say: one of these things is not like the others.
