Cheap Designer Duds Are No Longer Reserved for Sample Sizes

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you’ve probably heard of flash-sale sites like the Gilt Group and Rue La La. These online retailers often partner with celebrities and designers to offer high-end items at ridiculously reduced prices, allowing savvy shoppers to score Miu Miu star-print shifts and Proenza Schouler tie-dye tees without breaking the bank. Unfortunately, those shifts and tees rarely come in any sizes above a 10. But now, with the advent of Clique to Know, the plus size population also has an opportunity to score cheap, coveted finds.

The brainchild of mother-daughter team Patricia Duran and Melissa Ramos, Clique to Know slashes prices 50 to 80%, offers new sales every 72 hours, and sells nothing below size 10. What’s more, they’ve racked up some serious fashion cred with contributors (not all of them specifically plus-size) like Rachel Pally, Earnest Sewn, Jag Jeans, T-Bags, Lafayette 148, and Charles David, to name a few.  Apart from clothing, the site will carry shoes, accessories, lingerie, and beauty products.

As she explains in an interview with Refinery 29, Ramos aims to create an “online shopping destination for curvy women who have money to spend, but have a hard time finding these coveted sizes in their favorite fashion brands.” With the establishment of Clique to Know, Ramos and Duran hope to “encourage other brands to increase their plus size offerings.”

When it comes to establishing an image, Ramos and Duran point to VIEW Creative, the agency behind Aquascutum, Pringle of Scotland, The Savoy, and others. As the duo explains, they designed the site with the “high-spend consumer in mind.” That translates to editorial-like images with a “classy-but-discreet look.” Exactly how such a quality is achieved remains unclear, but it has something to do with artfully styled hair, elegant poses, and — of course — fabulous clothing.

Those who root for the size diversification of high fashion will certainly be pleased, but whether Ramos and Duran will attain their end goal — to alter the industry’s perception — remains to be seen. At the very least, it’s certainly (yet another) step in the right direction.
