Derek Lam Won’t Do A Collaboration Unless It’s ‘Something New’

Derek Lam‘s new secondary line 10 Crosby is a venture into new territory for the designer, but just because he’s making slightly lower priced clothes doesn’t mean he’s ready to jump into the fray of designer collaborations.

Lam assembled a group of bloggers at Barneys Co-Op on Wednesday night to talk about the new line in a Q&A moderated by the retailer’s fashion director Amanda Brooks. When Brooks — who was already wearing a pair of pants from the new collection — asked Lam who he’s trying to dress with 10 Crosby, he asked, “Can I say that it’s me, but feminine?”

After the laughter died down, the designer explained that he wasn’t really trying to address one particular concern, or one group of women. He wanted to make fresh clothes that would suit “a younger spirit” and satisfy his desire to make pieces in fabrics, colors and shapes that he loved.

And to that end, the line’s debut collection (for the upcoming resort season) is both louche and colorful. Lam said he wanted to make “pieces that I could never do in the collection,” like metallic wide leg trousers or deceptively simple short sleeved dresses.

Still, if he has other creative itches to scratch, don’t expect him to do it at Macy’s. Lam, who partnered with eBay on a crowd-curated capsule collection, told us after the Q&A that if he’s going to do another collaboration, it has to be something fresh.

“I personally said I never wanted to do that, not because I was being a snob, but I felt like by the time I was ready … it didn’t feel fresh anymore — so many people have already done it,” he explained. “So this collaboration with eBay was a combination of a new way of reaching an audience mixed with technology, which I thought was kind of interesting. I think collaborations are wonderful, but I’m always looking at it from, “Are we doing something new?”

For right now, it doesn’t get newer than Lam’s new line. You’ll find the 10 Crosby collection in Lam’s own stores and at Barneys.
