Derek Lam Claims Ivanka Trump ‘Perfectly Copied’ His Shoe Design

Did Ivanka Trump knock off Derek Lam? It sure looks like it.

Lam sent Trump a cease-and-desist letter in regards to her Cadie wedge, which looks nearly identical to Lam’s Ayami wedge. Derek Lam CEO Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann told WWD that until now they “have never seen a shoe that perfectly copied”, but also that he’s sure “Ms. Trump doesn’t know her wedge is copy because it’s through a license”.

Ah, yes — the dirty world of licensing. Ivanka Trump Footwear uses licensee Marc Fisher Footwear to design its shoes. Trump likely approves final products, but she has virtually nothing to do with the design process. Lam is giving Trump seven days to pull the shoe, which appears to be a Bloomingdale’s exclusive. It is sold for $150 on the department store’s website. Lam’s shoe sells for $780, though we couldn’t locate it at any online retailers.

And the designs do look insanely alike. Here, look:
