Is Abercrombie & Fitch selling racist pants? No, but this is one offensive spam situation.
This afternoon, a friend sent us a link to A&F “N****r Brown” pants. The pants live on a site called abercrombieandfitchoutletsale.com, a fake Abercrombie sale site. So despite Abercrombie’s history with racist merchandise, we’re pretty sure the company has less than nothing to do with the pants.
The site in question is registered to Patrick Welch, who has a Hong Kong email address and a North Carolina mailing address. However, abercrombieandfitchoutletsale.com is hardly the only site to sell the pants. A Google search revealed that there are tons of fake Abercrombie sale sites, most registered to different Chinese users, all selling the same offensively named bottoms. There’s newabercrombies.com, abercrombie-and-fitchoutlet.com, abercrombie-fitch-cool.com, and scores of others.
This is probably a product of web scraping, in which sites monitor other sites to steal (or “scrape”) information and automatically post it. It’s unclear where the pants originated, but it’s quite unlikely that the official Abercrombie site is the source.
