There’s a rumor going around that Italian designer Giambattista Valli will be the next big name to work on a collection for Macy’s Impulse line. But while Matthew Williamson and Karl Lagerfeld‘s collections for the line make sense, we’re not sure how Valli’s aesthetic will translate.
Valli’s clothing is beautiful, but it’s not for everyone. A lot of his clothing is very edgy and very forward thinking — they’re the kind of dresses that get noticed before the person wearing them gets noticed. Even his most basic sheath dresses call to mind a kind of sleek attitude that not everyone can pull off. Accordingly, his more complicated-looking frocks can be so beautiful they’re actually intimidating.
And if you’re a buyer at Macy’s, that’s not really what you want, is it? Macy’s position in fashion and in retail is predicated on the chain’s ability to cater to everyone, everywhere at almost every price point. Still, at this point the Valli deal is highly speculative, and if Macy’s really is working with Valli, they’re not saying anything about it. A rep told Women’s Wear Daily “We have not announced the next designer and do not comment on speculation.”
