Do you check Gilt as frequently as you check Facebook? Do you share sales like they’re Buzzfeed listicles? Do you stock up on discount arm candy like you do overpriced sweets at the airport?
Well then you might be excited to hear about Gilt Groupe’s new customer loyalty program – a first for the online flash sale market. As of today, Gilt Insider Program members are given reward points for interacting with the site, and can cash those reward points in for perks ranging from free domestic shipping to discount vouchers.
Though if you don’t already ascribe to any of the aforementioned behavior, or if you don’t have a large sum of supplementary cash to spend on luxury accessories, it’s probably not worth the hassle.
Under the Insider Program, you get five points for every dollar spent, 25 points for referring a friend and 100 points for visiting the site five days in a row. Cool, right? Not really. You need 3,500 points to qualify for free shipping, and no less than 25,000 for voucher-type discounts in the shop – which start at just $80, and require a minimum $5,000 spend.
So can you hack the system? Well if you can remind yourself to look at a Gilt sale every workday, and you do that for 250 weeks without fail, you’ll eventually be rewarded with $80 off merch and probably some restrictions on how you can spend it. And that’s before considering risk factors, because if your self-control is anything like ours, looking at half-price Tom Ford Crossbodys and Giuseppe mesh sandals every day is not going to benefit you financially in the long run.
