Yesterday we reported that we had seen sketches for Wu’s collection, and today the mass retailer tweeted a video confirming the designer’s involvement. Wu is certainly not a surprise pick. Not only is he a Michelle Obama favorite (the First Lady also loves Target), he is a CFDA darling just like past collaborators Proenza Schouler, Thakoon, and Rodarte.
Wu told WWD:
“This partnership offers an exciting opportunity for me to interpret my aesthetic into a collection made for a broader market. It was very interesting for me to translate my signature touches into a more affordable collection without compromising quality, design and sophistication. My collection for Target features clothes and accessories that are easily convertible from day to evening — sophisticated, feminine dresses, mix-and-match separates and playful accessories all with a bit of charm and dressed-up attitude.”
We’re beyond excited to own Wu pieces of our very own, just like his muse Diane Kruger and prom-goer Lindsey Wixson. (Wu is no stranger to collaborations, by the way — he designed plastic shoes for Melissa this past summer.) The collection will roll out in early 2012, though some customers are upset that Target would announce another collaboration right in the midst of the Missoni mess.
But fear not, diffusion line lovers, we don’t think you’ll encounter the same retail woes with Wu. The collection will be much smaller (Missoni had 400 pieces, Wu will likely have closer to 40), as will the hype (no 25-foot puppet this go around) and subsequent demand. We also have to imagine Target has learned from all those website errors and shipping problems, right?

UPDATE: We just got word from the Target peeps that Jason Wu for Target is actually a standalone collection that is not associated with Go International.
