It must be really good to be one of Michelle Obama‘s favorites. Jason Wu has no doubt been feeling the economic impact of the first lady wearing his dresses from day one of the Obama administration, and if his recent trip to Washington is any indication, her approval is really, really good for business.
WWD caught up with the young designer when he held a special preview of his fall collection in DC’s Long View Gallery. It was one of those special trunk shows that are sponsored by a department store (Nordstrom) and a magazine (Vanity Fair) that invite rich ladies to sip champagne and meet the designer. And to shop! And shop they did.
“It was an amazing success,” said Wu, whose cocktail bash and one-hour personal appearance made more than $200,000 in sales and pre-sales. “One customer bought 41 pieces, basically the entire fall collection.”
We’ll remind you, of course, that spring just started yesterday, so it’s going to be a while before that very wealthy woman will be able to wear all of those clothes. But to get them before anyone else is kinda special. We just hope she doesn’t think Wu’s price tag is affordable.
