Just because Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are getting divorced doesn’t mean they can’t still sell obscene amounts of mass-marketed apparel in perfect harmony together. The couple, who announced they’d be ending their marriage of seven years late last week, plans to roll full steam ahead on their line of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories for Kohl’s. The merchandise will be in stores come September.
The deal was announced last November, long before there were signs of trouble in paradise. Kohl’s had been marketing the Lopez/Anthony partnership as “the first celebrity couple to simultaneously design collections for one retailer.” But now that they’re celebrity exes, the retailer has been painfully careful to point out that the contracts for the deal were written separately — one multi-million dollar celebrity collaboration for Lopez, and one multi-million dollar celebrity collaboration for Anthony. Per Women’s Wear Daily:
Rick Darling, president of LF USA, which is sublicensing the brands to Kohl’s exclusively, said, “We have two separate agreements with Jennifer and Marc and always intended to have separate lines. [Their split] doesn’t impact the agreements in any way.”
But we tend to think it’ll impact how the line sells, don’t you? Call us crazy, but we don’t know how comfortable we’d feel perusing the racks at Kohl’s, looking from one section of the store at Marc’s pants across to J.Lo’s wall of handbags across the aisle, wondering which one of them got to pick up Max and Emme (the couple’s 3-year-old twins) from daycare that week. Their split isn’t just distracting, it’s also kinda sad.
That consideration doesn’t seem to be standing in the way of the couple’s other business ventures, though. Our sisters at GossipCop report that Anthony and Lopez will still work together on a television show called ¡Q’Viva! The Chosen, which will hunt for undiscovered talent across Latin America.
