There’s nothing we love more than a designer collaboration, but so often the final product falls a little (and sometimes a lot) short of our expectations. But in Julian Louie‘s case, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Last year, Louie teamed up with Aldo to create the shoes for his Spring 2011 presentation and while his clothes were a hit, the shoes were so well-received that Aldo decided to make them available to all their shoppers. In other words: you!
Louie’s creations for Aldo are sky-high platform wedges in delightfully fashion-forward shapes and Ikat prints. We attended last night’s launch party — hosted by Joe Zee! — for the shoes at Aldo’s Soho outpost, where even this heel-phobic editor was inspired to shell out. Each iteration — there are four: two shoe styles in two different prints — is going for $125 a pop, which means walking out with two wouldn’t be exactly unreasonable. (Though, no, we won’t call it affordable.)
Just two years ago, Louie said he had no interest in teaming up with a mass retailer, telling New York Magazine, “I’m not trying to offer an everyday wardrobe. I don’t want to create a lifestyle. I like the more rarefied aspect of fashion.” We’d call him out on that, except he seems to have stuck to his word: these shoes aren’t for the everyday, but they’re certainly worth it.
The shoes go on sale in stores and online today. Which pair do you like best?
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
