Kim Kardashian Launches Credit Card For Children

We’re all about kids learning how to spend responsibly, but we doubt seriously that the Kardashian Prepaid MasterCard is the right way to go about doing that. And yes, the Kardashian Prepaid MasterCard is actually a method by which your daughter can pay her bill at Claire’s.

Kim, Khloe and Kourtney will attend a party tomorrow to launch the card, which can be used by children as young as 13. It’s kind of similar to the Visa Buxx card, in that parents can put a given amount of money on it and then track their child’s spending. The only difference is that it’s 2010, and MasterCard clearly does not underestimate the power of the celebrity sisters to move product.

And that’s the problem here: children are impressionable (duh), and the card might make it a little too easy for kids to think they can actually keep up with the Kardashians. Can you imagine how much drama there’s going to be when little Suzy Swipes-a-lot finally reaches her parent’s limit and has a Kourtney-sized tantrum at the point of sale? Now multiply that by the thousands of teenage spenders who will no doubt clamor for one of these cards. Say goodbye to peaceful weekends at the mall, folks.

As dangerous as that sounds, though, the company that’s launching the card told Page Six that not having one is even more of a threat to your kids’ well being. Why? Because without it, they’ll buy drugs.

“Teens do not spend their money as their parents think they do,” a rep for Mobile Resource, which is launching the card, said. “And, drugs are a huge problem in this country. I give my son a small amount of cash and track his spending on his card.”

Sounds like a responsible plan, but there are more effective ways to keep your kids from doing drugs than giving them your money to spend. Like trusting them, and maybe raising them to respect federal law.

We want to know whether you think this card is a good idea. Let us know if you’d ever let your child carry a Kardashian in their wallet in our comments section.
