No wonder Matthew Williamson quickly changed his mind about Kate Middleton. It’s been reported — by people who can do math and stuff — that the future princess and someday queen of England can inspire some serious clothing purchases. How serious? Middleton’s preference for knee-high boots has inspired the women of the British Isles to run into stores for boots just like hers. And so many women have done it that sales of such boots have increased 663 percent.
The Daily Telegraph reports that women all over England (but especially in Liverpool, because that’s where trends live before they scamper all over the world to bite and infect people with their trendiness) have taken such a strong liking to the preferred footwear of the future queen and her mother and sister. All three were spotted wearing sensible flat or low-heeled boots that cover the entire leg during the colder months. It’s worth nothing that they also seem to be the shoe of choice for another member of the British establishment, Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Middleton has had a similar impact with other specific items of clothing, but not with categories of clothes in general. For example, a number of brands both British and American were quick to make copies of the blue Issa dress Middleton wore to announce her engagement. Reiss and Whistles, which are not the kinds of brands that are beholden to celebrities and their cachet, re-released the dress and blouse Middleton wore in her official engagement portrait.
It’s been said that Middleton is keen not to become a “fashion icon” in the manner of First Lady Michelle Obama or even her fiance’s mother, Princess Diana. But it looks to us like whether she wants to be one or not is immaterial — she’s going to be. Good on Matthew Williamson for proclaiming that he’s a “big fan.” Princess Catherine is going to be huge for business.
