Kelly Osbourne is the new face of Madonna‘s Material Girl line, and it’s all because of Madge’s too-cool-for-school 14-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon. Today WWD explores the relationship between the two stylish young ladies, and we have some thoughts.
1. It feels like the industry rag kind of set Lola up to sound naive and silly! This is what she had to say about shooting the ad campaign in some East Village bars in the middle of the day: “Yeah, there were people drinking there and it was, like, three in the afternoon. And it’s, like, OK cool. It was awesome. There were some interesting people there. I think they didn’t even notice that there was, like, a girl in short-shorts being photographed.”
2. 26-year-old Kelly is not “significantly older” than ex-Material Girl spokesperson 17-year-old Taylor Momsen. Yes, there is certainly a big difference between being 17 and 26, but “significantly older?” Not quite. Plus, as Osbourne says: “What I like about it is that it’s a brand for every woman, not just for young girls.”
3. Lourdes’s idolization of Kelly is super cute and super relatable. “I remember exactly what she was wearing: a striped maxidress with a jean jacket and pink blazer and I thought she looked so cool. So when [Iconix] came to us with a selection of girls [for the campaign] and she was one of them, I was like, ‘Oh my God, she’s great and she has great style.’ I just think she’s very individual but at the same time she’s very fashionable.” Didn’t everyone have that cool older friend/sister/friend’s sister that they wanted to be when they were 14?
Other notes: Lourdes is living the Fame life as a freshman at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and she shops like a normal teenager (her favorites include Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and Topshop). But unlike a normal teenager, she actually listens to her mom. We guess we would have too, if we had Madonna for a mother.
On the day of the campaign shoot, Madonna herself arrived late in the afternoon to Bathhouse Studios to go over the day’s results, carefully scrolling through each shot with Leon at her side. At one point, Madonna suggested to her daughter that she style a scarf on Osbourne’s head in a way similar to how Leon sometimes does herself — and the resulting photo is now a key campaign image.
And, now, those campaign images:
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
