We don’t have easy access to most African fashion, which is unfortunate. Given what we’ve seen in the past there is a lot of awesome fashion on the continent. But in America and Europe, it’s not convenient to actually buy.
Thankfully, there’s a new start-up about to completely change that. Kisua is a new ecommerce site that’s collaborating with a wide variety of African designers to create ready-to-wear capsule collections that will be available online. They know a large reason African fashion hasn’t made a name for itself around the globe is that people outside of Africa have trouble acquiring its products. But as the company’s founder Samuel Mensah says, “The talent has always been here, we just lacked a platform like this to show it to consumers.”
Kisua’s goal is not only to fund projects for up-and-coming designers and to facilitate affordable collections, but they also prioritize making the products available to the international market. So when you order the products online, they’ll actually be shipped from warehouses in the U.S. or U.K., depending on your location. This means in addition to an easy-to-use online shopping experience, you won’t have to wait too long for the clothes to reach your door.
The first collection will be available on October 3 on Kisua.com, and will include 70 unique pieces from 10 different designers. According to WWD, the designs will see “wax prints sourced in Ghana playing a starring role in the mix,” and the prices range from about $60 for a top and $90 to $120 for dresses to around $300 for a coat. So affordable!
On Kisua.com, you can sign up for a reminder when the site launches in October. But until then, you can browse their Tumblr for African fashion inspiration. It’s incredible, and a lot more colorful and fun than most other fashion inspiration sites we’ve seen.
