Was Margiela For H&M Too ‘Fashion Forward’ To Sell?

Apparently not everyone wants a dress with a few extra arms or a pair of jeans with room enough for two.

Page Six reports that the Margiela for H&M collaboration is “tanking” at stores, positing that high prices (the collection ran up to $399 for certain pieces) and excess merchandise production may have been to blame. Or, of course, it may just have been “too fashion forward” for the retailers usual shoppers.

When they contacted H&M, however, the company claimed to be “very happy by [its] customers’ positive response,” explaining that “[Our] philosophy is to provide fashion for everyone at affordable prices. For Margiela, H&M offered this collection in larger volume.” We’ll have to wait and see if next time (for that maybe-Givenchy collab) they’ll decide to rethink that strategy.
