Ladies, it’s time to lock up that Nair because this summer the boys are re-embracing the short-short in all it’s pale, upper thighed goodness. According to WWD, as temperatures and stock prices muster a cautious climb, men’s swim lengths are heading north and maillot makers are eschewing boardshorts for a leggier length.
“Everyone has talked about shorts getting shorter but swim has really led the charge,” said Eric Jennings, men’s fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue. And we’ll be the first to say: it’s about darn time! While we’d never champion a Speedo, on the list of things that make our skin crawl, a pair of baggy, cargo-pocketed bathers is right up there with a cell-phone belt clip and blinged out mannery. Plus, the trend has a vintage lean that stands in perfect complement to all those retroish, pin-up girl bikinis we’ve had our eye on of late — think “Dick and Jane’s Fun in the Sun.”
WWD notes that vintage palettes and patterns from the Fifties and Sixties are trending, as are bright colors — even neons, a nod to 80s’ California surf culture. Highlighter hues and pale white thighs — excuse us while we put on our sunnies… Make that our freshly minted pair of Ray Ban Aviators.
Seriously though, this sounds to us like yet another marker of menswear making a sharp return to classic modes of suiting up; it’s the summertime equivalent of that double breasted number. In short, we’re giving this one the go-ahead. So channel your inner Selleck and dive in boys!
