Japan Thinks The New York City Subway System Is Oh-So-Fashionable

Public transportation, however unfashionable it may be, is a thing we love. And when it’s done well, it’s efficient, democratizing, and downright brilliant. The New York City transit system has it’s problems, but there are certainly things to appreciate about the MTA. And apparently the people of Japan agree!

We’ve ridden subways in Japan, and they put New York’s to shame. But that hasn’t stopped “Japanese hipsters” from buying tons of New York transit swag. In fact, Japanese purchases accounted for more than 20% of the $5 million worth of MTA merch sold last year. As the MTA’s chief of marketing explains: “We seem to do especially well in countries that have an affinity for subway systems.” Well, sure!

As much as we love the subway, we’re not sure how we feel about the MTA’s “fashion” items. Check out our slideshow below, and tell us what you think. Would you buy any of these subway-themed items?
