You know how they say some celebrities are big in Japan? Well, Paris Hilton is more famous in India than she ever was in the United States. The heiress is so big in Mumbai that she’s not just making appearances at parties there. She’s opening up brick-and-mortar Paris Hilton-branded stores.
Yes. Stores. As in more than one. Women’s Wear Daily reports that Hilton-mania is so strong in some parts of India that her various accessories lines have the potential to turn into a multi-million dollar business. And like any smart businesswoman, Hilton and company are doing everything they can to take advantage of the desire for good products in this emerging market. Per WWD:
“India is one of the largest markets for accessories in Asia and is fast becoming a resource for revenue in the luxury market globally,” Hilton said, sounding like a pro. “India has given an overwhelming response to my collection and I am confident that my range will soon become a craze in the country.”
Of course that craze won’t happen unless someone feeds it, so Hilton’s business partners are adding wood as much wood to the fire as possible. Earlier this week, Hilton opened not one, but two stores in Mumbai — and there are a whole lot more coming.
“We plan to invest more than $4 million over the next two years in opening Paris Hilton stores, and estimate to have 50 stand-alone stores by then, along with other points of sale,” said Prateek Maheshwari, director of Brand Concepts, the licensee for Paris Hilton in India.
Well, well. Look who’s laughing now.
