To be blunt, Richard Avedon was perhaps the most talented and best recognized fashion photographer of the 20th century. His iconic images made entire careers and still inspire today’s magazine editors. And come November, over 60 of those images will go on sale.
Christie’s will auction off the largest lot of Avedon’s work in history on behalf of the Richard Avedon Foundation. The money will go toward an endowment that will promote the photographer’s work. The lot will include the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s copy of “Dovima with the Elephants,” a vintage portrait of Marilyn Monroe, several pictures of The Beatles and a Malcolm X print made for Avedon’s retrospective at the Whitney Museum.
The total collection is expected to bring in close to $4 million — “Dovima” is estimated to sell for between $500,000 and $700,000.
But, if you don’t have that kind of cash laying around, you can always look at a few of Avedon’s iconic images (that may or may not be on sale) right here on Styleite.
