If tragic and untimely, Alexander McQueen’s death might just have given the designer the mainstream acceptance that had seemed to allude him in life. Word on the street is that uber-department store Saks Fifth Avenue has placed an exclusive order for all 16 pieces of the late designer’s final collection. Each piece will retail from $12,000 to $50,000.
Saks has never shied away from McQueen, but they’ve always played it pretty safe, sticking to printed scarves, cocktail rings and the occasional LBD over his more theatrical fare. So it will be interesting to see how the dramatic looks which composed his final collection — the trophic prints, gilded coats, and high collars made entirely of feathers –will do in a department store setting. We have a feeling Saks is banking on customers viewing McQueen’s final pieces as works of art — not ready-to-wear.
Regardless, as his family prepares to scatter his ashes in his ancestral home of Scotland, this is yet another reminder of all that was lost and that which was left behind by his passing.
