When it’s 90 degrees outside and New York City smells like an armpit (Joe Zee said it, we’re just reiterating), one of our favorite things to do is daydream about a summer holiday somewhere in Europe, preferably in the 50s, and ideally with someone who looks and dresses like Gregory Peck. But the most important part of this daydream is the Vespa, on which we and our mythical Gregory Peck-lookalike boyfriend scoot around Rome, or maybe even somewhere a little more beachy, and sip rosé from our hand-packed glasses while cuddling on a picnic blanket overlooking the sea.

The problem with this activity is that it’s, well, a daydream and, as such, has no bearing on real life. Until now. Color us behind the times but Vespas are insanely reasonable. Did you know that you could own your very own uber-fashionable scooter for less than the cost of two Tom Ford lipsticks? (And you know how much we love our lipstick.) Seriously. Let’s say you want to get yourself a Vespa S 50 4V in, oh, we don’t know, a sky-inspired white and blue two-tone. With a $350 down payment, and based on a 60 month Installment Loan Program through an approved provider at 11.90% interest rate, your monthly payment would be less than $65. We spend more than that during our lunchtime trips to H&M!

But let’s talk trends. Everyone and their mother knows that bicycles are the hipster mode of transportation du jour, but who wants to peddle when the city feels like a swamp? Also, we can’t think of anything to better pair with our favorite rucksack than a Vespa — how very continental. We think the vintage-styled LXV 150 i.e. in mint green would go great with J.Crew’s blush-pink backpack, while our old-school Boy Scout rucksack would probably play best off of a dragon red LX 150 i.e.

So, while we may not be able to afford a Hampton’s house (or, better yet, an actual roman holiday), you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll find us tooling around NYC this summer on a candy-colored Vespa — with our perfectly coordinated backpack in tow. Now, if only we could find ourselves a Gregory Peck-lookalike to go with it.
