UPDATED: Anna Wintour Wears Tom Ford To Gucci Dinner
UPDATE: In the post below, we write that Anna Wintour was the first to wear something from Tom Ford’s womenswear collection in public. This is not true. Annette Bening wore a black gown by the designer to the Golden Globes earlier this month. Kudos to TPMStyle for pointing that out. In that case, the most interesting aspect of Wintour’s ensemble is that she wore it to a Gucci dinner — which is to say, the house Ford singlehandedly rejuvenated before moving on to launch his menswear collection. Also, who’d have thought Wintour would look so good in Ford?
When Tom Ford debuted his eponymous womenswear collection back in September, it came with a few ground rules: no photos, no magazine coverage, and no red carpets until at least December. Ford felt that fashion had become “overexposed” due to its focus on celebrities and red carpets and instead wanted to keep his consumers curious until February deliveries. But December came and went without a Ford dress on a red carpet, and the Golden Globes proved barren as well. But this week, in a move befitting her title, Anna Wintour officially became the first woman to wear Ford in public.
Wintour wore a black and white leopard print dress to the Gucci dinner earlier this week, which she accessorized with black boots and a necklace made up of three strands of chunky gemstones. We’re loving the look — and we think it speaks to Ford’s versatility; Ms. Wintour isn’t exactly of the va-va-voom style for which Ford has become so well known.
Take a look and tell us what you think — and then place your bets on who will be wearing Ford at the Academy Awards, because we bet our bottom dollars that’s what he’s saving up for. Don’t you?
