DIY: Commes Des Garcons Cloche Hat
Headgear is one of the most underrated accessories a woman or man can don to complete an outfit. And I’m not talking about the brace-face you used to have in high school –- these toppers are classy conversation pieces.
In particular, the hats seen in the Comme des Garçons Spring 2010 collection left everybody talking. But in white, the sewn-on petals looked eerily similar to makeup pads. I wanted to create something a bit more wearable for this week’s DIY project and, as I am an avid hat collector, I had the perfect cloche for the task. Because I happened to have all of the materials mandatory to carry out my plan, the total cost was a whopping $0.
-large swatch of felt
-round, fez-like hat in a matching color
-thread in a matching color
-round shape – I used a pill bottle
-Optional: glue gun
Step 1: Trace a few dozen circles on the felt with help from your chosen “round shape.” If you realize that you don’t have enough circle, you can always go back and trace some more. (Obviously!) Then, cut out the circles.
Step 2: Use a simple stitch the attach the circles in stacked rows around the hat. As I noted above, you have the option to use the glue gun to firmly adhere the circles.
Step 3: This is when I realized that the brim on my cloche was unnecessary and I trimmed it off.
Step 4: Prop it on top of your head.
Did you just create a hat worthy of a runway show? Hell yes, you did.
