FRIDAY DIY: Luella Bartley’s Purse Baubles

Fashionistas around the world shed copious tears upon learning that Luella Bartley would shutter her eponymous label, Luella. The final collection from Spring 2010 featured a signature, dainty quirkiness with floral patterns and delicate detailing. But what stood out the most were the purse accessories: flower-covered balls on tough chains, hanging from buttery-soft leather bags.

Bags charms have been popular for a few years and range from fox fur tails to studded leather strips. With only a few easy-to-find tools and a hot glue gun, you can make your own homage to Luella.

Materials needed:

-pair of scissors
-glue gun
-styrofoam balls (3+)
-two bundles of fake flowers
-key rings
-pencil

Step 1: Trim the flowers off of their stems, giving a few centimeters of room to be stuck into the holes that you will poke into the styrofoam balls.

Step 2: Glue one key ring onto each ball and press the metal into the styrofoam so that it will be securely fastened.

Step 3: Use your pencil to poke holes into the balls and add a bit of glue onto the ends of your trimmed flowers. Slip the ends into the holes and hold for a few seconds to allow the glue to dry.

Step 4: Layer each ball with flowers until it is completely covered. Put them to the side for a few minutes to make sure that they fully dry and will not cling to any fabrics.

Step 5: Once dry, adorn them on your favorite slouchy purse.

It is a bit of a time-consuming project, I won’t even lie, and there is risk of burning the tips of your fingers with that damn glue gun, but the results will be adorable. The flower charms are also ridiculously light and add a girly touch to any tote. Say “hello” to springtime!
