DIY: Meadham Kirchoff Pipe Cleaner Tiara

Continuing with the theme of conversation-starting headgear, Meadham Kirchhoff recently sent his models down the runway in pipe cleaner tiaras. Is that what consumers can expect in stores for Fall 2010? If so, count me as a fan, but don’t expect me to spend a lot (if anything).

Making your own Kirchhoff-inspired headpiece is a clear throwback to summer camp arts and crafts hour and with bags of pipe cleaners at such a low cost, you can create crowns time and time again. They aren’t just for first grade birthday celebrations anymore!

I was lucky enough to find a few dozen pipe cleaners in the deep recesses of my craft room (Doesn’t everyone have one?), so this D-I-Y was F-R-E-E. Not only super affordable, the project was also extremely simple and quick to complete; I was done within minutes.

Materials needed:

-a pair of scissors
-bag of multicolored pipe cleaners (Kirchhoff used metallic)

Step 1: Take two pipe cleaners of the same color and twist the ends together to form a circle, which will be the base of your tiara.

Step 2: Choose pipe cleaners in two additional colors and twist them around the base into ornate shapes that would look appropriate on a royal crown. Form wire gemstones, curls, etc. Trim them as needed.

Step 3: Put it on and make all the peasants at your next social event jealous.

That was ridiculous amounts of easy, no? I agree. A pipe cleaner tiara may seem like a silly and potentially-immature addition to a dressy outfit, but it is important to keep a level of lightheartedness. Don’t ever take fashion too seriously.
