Michelle Obama Wears Alexander McQueen To State Dinner!

Contrary to almost every breathless prediction we read today, Michelle Obama did not select an Asian-American designer’s dress for the state dinner with China. Instead, the First Lady wore a gown designed by the late Alexander McQueen to host Chinese President Hu Jintao and his wife, First Lady Liu Yongqing.

A McQueen spokesperson declined to comment other than to identify the dress as a “Red Petal Print Silk Organza Gown.” The gown appears to be from Alexander McQueen’s Resort 2011, though it looks like Obama had the sleeves shortened, as well as a few other tweaks. Obama paired the dress with a pair of Kimberly McDonald earrings.

Though she didn’t choose a Chinese designer, the color red does symbolize good luck in Chinese culture.

I don’t know which is more beautiful. The first lady or the first wearable gown from the McQueen label. Love, love, love.

You know it’s a changed world when the most fashion forward dress of Golden Globes week is on the first lady, at a state dinner, no less. And she looks incredible.
