PHOTOS: Michelle Obama’s Spectacular Southeast Asia Outfits
First lady Michelle Obama can’t go anywhere and not look good, and she proved that yet again on her recent trip through Southeast Asia. Mrs. O and the president stopped in India and Indonesia where they visited temples, official residences, sites of tragedy and mirth alike — and the even did a little fancy footwork with a few schoolchildren. While the first lady is currently comparing style notes with Bettina Wulff in Germany, the looks from her Asia trip are the ones that got our attention.
And we’re not the only ones who took notice. The Washington Post‘s Robin Givhan astutely noted that many of the designer’s Obama wore on this trip are Indian American or rely on Indian handiwork to produce their clothing. “Obama’s wardrobe not only serves as a nod of respect to her hosts, but also sends a message about the country’s place in the global fashion economy,” she wrote. Indeed her clothes were everything they should have been: muted and respectful of the culture she was observing, but festive and stylish enough not to be boring. We’ve really got to hand it to her: Michelle can dress for anything.
Below, a few of our favorite looks from her trip.
