Vogue Italia’s latest cover story, shot by famed photog Steven Meisel titled “Haute Mess”, sparked a brushfire of discussion last week over whether or the not the spread was in fact racist. Models done up in dramatic hairdo’s, candy-colored makeup, and elaborate nail art were shot draped in diner booths and surrounded by fast food. The set up and styling caused many to wonder if the story was intentionally poking fun at African American and Latino culture.
For fashion magazines, a single September issue can make or break the year. The Audit Board of Circulation’s Rapid Report, which counts the number of single-copy sales of each magazine, lets us know just how well the glossies fared. And you might be surprised at which celebrity gave their magazine a serious newsstand sales boost.
Much as we love our men’s fashion mags (GQ, V Man, Details, Nylon Guys), we love a good men’s mag with scandal even more. Enter Geil magazine, a German men’s high-end fashion magazine that’s come under the scrutiny of the international fashion community for its association with bad business practices, bad credit, and a bad, bad man named Dan Mancinetti.
