Even on a rainy Tuesday night, we’re more than willing to make the trek up to 92nd street to take in another installment of the 92Y‘s “Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis” series. So far, we’ve heard Tom Ford tell us about meeting the love of his life, Michael Kors have everyone in stitches over childhood anecdotes, and Diane von Furstenberg spout inspirational aphorisms. Last night it was Vera Wang‘s turn to bring the spotlight onto her own success story.
There really is never a dull moment with Betsey Johnson, even when the designer is talking about such humdrum subjects as paying back one’s loans.
From her mother’s narrow escape at Auschwitz to why she would never date a lawyer, here are a few things you should know about the inimitable Diane von Furstenberg.
At Concept Korea‘s spring 2013 presentation this morning, The Stage at Lincoln Center was fittingly transformed into South Korea. Complete with native Korean designers and music from pop stars like the Wonder Girls and Psy, guests were given a glimpse into the culture.
Jessica Chastain, Chloë Sevigny, and more flocked to YSL‘s screening of Lawless in New York last night. The flick stars Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, and Chastain, who is also the face of YSL’s new scent Manifesto. As such, the 35-year-old actress wore a vintage black YSL number and accessorized with an arm full of colorful bracelets. And what about everyone else?
“If Michael weren’t a designer, he could probably have his own stand-up show,” joked Fern Mallis last night about guest Michael Kors at the latest installment of the “Fashion Icons” series at the 92Y. And we doubt anyone in the audience would disagree (including Anna Wintour herself).
Did you miss out on Tom Ford‘s fantastic talk with Fern Mallis as part of her 92Y “Fashion Icons” series? Fear not!
“Wow, there’s a lot of you,” Tom Ford said to last night’s 92Y audience. His talk, part of Fern Mallis‘s “Fashion Icons” series, had been sold out for four months. An upstairs room held guests who watched the conversation on a livestream. Everyone wanted to see Tom.
“I heard that once you and your buddies made money, you couldn’t spend it fast enough. That at one point, you had a Porsche, a Mercedes, a Jaguar, and a Jeep,” the formidable Fern Mallis chided Tommy Hilfiger. The designer laughed and gave a sheepish smile. “Well… yeah, that sounds about right.”
Donna Karan is one of those designers whose name just sounds influential when you hear it said out loud — and that’s because she is. But apparently, you can’t get to the upper echelons of the global fashion business without first putting a few people’s lives in danger.
Last night Calvin Klein was Fern Mallis’s latest guest for her 92nd Street Y “Fashion Icons” lecture series, and the former designer was extremely candid with the industry vet. Calling his brand the most recognized in the world, Mallis steered the conversation with questions about Klein’s Bronx roots, his wildly successful career, and what he’s up to today.
Diane von Furstenberg kept hundreds of people rolling in the aisles at last night’s TimesTalk, hosted by NYT reporter Eric Wilson. Her comments on being a young designer, It bags, and how the wrap dress can get you laid after the jump.
Mallis has stepped down from her role as senior vice president at IMG Worldwide Inc. effective tomorrow, and will be promptly starting up Fern Mallis LLC, her own consulting firm.
