Halloween costumes and chic style are not synonymous, which presents It girls with a bit of fashion conundrum come October. Still, they always manage to deliver.
It’s common knowledge that Halloween is Heidi Klum’s favorite day of the year and that she not only sees to it that her spooky soirée is the biggest bash of the year, but that her costume is most impressive of all. This year the supermodel didn’t disappoint, looking literally unrecognizable as a 100-year-old woman, with the gray hair, wrinkly skin, et all. All we have to say is RESPECT.
And just like that, Bryanboy wins fashion industry Halloween.
Our 4-year-old selves would be ashamed to hear us say it, but we’ve come to think Cruella de Vil is kind of chic.
From Alexa Chung as the Hamburglar to Hugh Hefner as Robin Thicke, see 16 of our best-loved looks from our favorite day of the year.
We gave you plenty of notice and implored you to start your Cara Delevingne, Beyoncé, Kanye West and Anna Dello Russo costumes early, but you didn’t. You could do something mind-warpingly incredible with makeup, but maybe you have two left hands. Maybe you’re allergic. Maybe you don’t want to catch public transport looking like Human Barbie’s BFF’s creepy transgender Justin Bieber clone.
Okay, it’s All Hallows Eve. You don’t yet have a costume. All the ones at Ricky’s are now 30 to 50% off, but you’d rather just pay the full $64.99 + tax than get in a physical altercation with a 16-year-old over the last Sexy Aviator outfit. But fear not! If you’d rather keep you pants on tomorrow, you can do absolutely paralyzingly terrifying things using only makeup and your own face.
So what did people dress like before advent of the 9th century, the Sexy Vagina costume or Miley Cryus’ VMA twerkathon? What were the costumes du jour before blackface was ‘cool’ and Anorexia was sexy? Well, you might be surprised to learn that the thought process behind a good costume has stayed relatively samey, with famous events, showbiz and even objects of that era dictating the decades’ most popular disguises.
Your first thought upon reading that was probably one of the following: ‘Huh?’, ‘Isn’t it 2013?’ or ‘Why are we even still having this conversation?’ The answers are ‘yes, ‘yes’ and ‘I DON’T KNOW EITHER BUT SOME PEOPLE STILL THINK IT’S OKAY.’
This week we’re grabbing our figurative shovels and heading to the digital graveyard of Spring 2014 fashion month to bring the season’s most outré looks back to life.
Whether it’s actually during one of its annual Halloween specials or not, Pretty Little Liars is always ripe with costume inspiration. Sure, their over-the-top ensembles are a bit out of touch with reality — but isn’t that the case for all ABC Family shows?
Halloween has many things in common with fashion week — the crazy outfits, the obsessive Instagramming, the alcohol and sugary snack foods that usurp the role of nutritious meals. They’re also both great times to experiment with unconventional beauty trends.
If I’ve learned anything over the last hour or so it’s that there’s nothing more frightening than a combination of glitter, skulls, orange and poor coordination. As such, the Halloween manicure is dangerous territory for people who want to look Mean Girls scary rather than scary scary.
For most of the world, Halloween is associated with October and pumpkin spice lattes. In fashion, where capes and stage makeup are things to be worn at every opportunity, it’s an always on-trend aesthetic.
Two complete outfits, a pair of sweatpants and one awesome night.
Dressing as Lady Gaga is harder this year than it has been in the past, due to her recent aversion to getting dressed at all. No disrespect: If you’ve got it, flaunt it, but if it’s the chillier end of fall and there’s a risk of encountering small children, you might want to reconsider.
Kanye West took his relationship with fashion to the next level this year. He collaborated with A.P.C., he wrote a song about Hedi Slimane, he sat front row at New York Fashion Week and he started a rumor about hiring Christophe Decarnin for round three of his label’s Paris comeback.. He established further fashion cred as the unofficial inventor of leather jogging pants and the father of the chic-est baby ever.
Beyoncé has many physical incarnations, and next year she’ll have even more. But the most buzzed about of 2013 — even more than her power-outaging Superbowl performance — was the pixie cut/wig removal that sparked a thousand memes. Or nine of them at least.
You can’t be model-turned-travel blogger Cara Delevingne, but you can ’be’ her for Halloween. Just gather together Karl Lagerfeld, a British accent, a couple of über-relevant model/pop star BFFs, a few multi-million dollar modeling contracts and a good scandal for good measure. Or, in lieu of those things, check out our costume suggestions below.
Heidi Klum is the queen of Halloween, but she had to postpone her annual over-the-top bash due to Hurricane Sandy. This weekend, Klum was finally able to bust out her Cleopatra costume for her “Haunted Holiday Party” benefitting the American Red Cross.
