Less than eight months after Tavi Gevinson announced that she’d be partnering with Jane founder Jane Pratt on a teen-focused web and print publication, the 15-year-old phenom has decided to strike out on her own.
Last week, after a long day of blogging, we made our way to Brooklyn to catch The Talent Show at Littlefield. The theme of the night was Sassy Magazine, and we were as intrigued by the premise as were by the biggest name on the bill: Tavi Gevinson.
Some teenage girls have sleepovers to sneak out of the house. Some teenage girls have sleepovers to play Truth or Dare and watch scary movies. And some teenage girls have sleepovers to brainstorm book proposals and teen feminist philosophy. Blogger extraordinaire Tavi Gevinson is obviously part of the latter.
The last time we checked in on Jane Pratt‘s latest project, we learned that her new site — JanePratt.com — was separate from (but related to!) Tavi‘s teen ‘zine that will include web and print components. Now we’ve learned a few more details about JanePratt.com, most important of which is that it got a new name: xoJane.com.
On Tuesday, we received our first email alert from JanePratt.com, the new (and obviously eponymous) site founded by the former Sassy and Jane editor in chief. The details were spare: other than a Facebook link and a promise that they were “really close to launching”, the blast left us with more questions than answers. What exactly is JanePratt.com? Why did she call it JanePratt.com? And where does Tavi Gevinson fit in to all of this?
Tavi Gevinson and Jane Pratt are working really fast to get their new joint venture off the ground. Is it wrong that we’re excited about how fast they’re forging ahead?
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Tavi gets it. (Remember this? Miuccia: “I’m impressed by the comprehension that Tavi has of fashion.” Yeah.) Tavi’s been crushing on Sassy for a while now. And because Tavi is not your average 14-year-old, she’s starting her own version of the title with Sassy (and Jane!) founder Jane Pratt. Yes, Tavi is bringing back Sassy.
