We’re almost a week away from the end of 2011, which means the web is filled with listicles and Best Of proclamations and somewhat arbitrary rankings of all things fashion and style. It has also brought us face to face with a popular opinion that has been bothering us for quite some time: Pippa Middleton, The Style Icon.
In lieu of a year end Best Dressed List, we thought we’d share with you the personalities who, for better or for worse, defined style in 2010. These are the people whose names, next year or ten years from now, will be synonymous with what it meant to be en vogue at the end of the first decade of the 21st century.
The one lexicographic distinction that we here at Styleite are always going to follow is the one that exists between “style icon” and “style star.” Why? Because people like Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman like to give people like Blake Lively just a smidge too much credit sometimes, and we feel the need — nay, the responsibility — to reign crap like that in.
Lynn Yaeger is a sight to behold. The witty fashion writer is a style icon and a New York fixture — and we love her. A favorite of Bill Cunningham and Scott Schuman alike, she is instantly recognizable thanks to her bright orange bob, doll-like makeup and layered, quirky style.
