Aaahhh the age-old battle: L.A. vs. New York. Does-it-all fashion designer/actress Tara Subkoff directed this little diddy featuring bold fashion maven Chloë Sevigny rolling on about her distaste for “the world’s largest waiting room.” I.e.: Los Angeles.

To be a fashion writer is to be a fly on the wall. You aren’t one of the shiny front rowers, nor do you want to be. You slink back a bit, take it in, and hope you observe something noteworthy. And sometimes you do just that.

In the grand scheme of fashion events, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner doesn’t usually rank very high. There’s a red carpet and some lovely dresses and everything, but other than what First Lady Michelle Obama is wearing, there usually isn’t a style story there. Last night Elle celebrated Tinseltown’s elite at their Women in Hollywood celebration. Vets like Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn mixed with the younger set, which included Mad Men‘s adorable Kiernan Shipka (who looked like she walked right off the set in her retro frock). The fashionable crowd included Sofia Coppola (classy in black and white), Rachel Zoe (fabulous in fur), Gwyneth Paltrow (punchy in tangerine) and many more.

Wednesday night in New York City saw a host of events, but a few in particular caught our eye both for their star-studded invite list and the resulting sartorial stylings. From Tara Subkoff’s questionable leather shorts to Shenae Grimes’ absolute trainwreck of an outfit, it was a good night in pictures. Hilary Rhoda and Coco Rocha face-off in fashion wars, Lourdes does the step and repeat in a rocker chic pair of ripped nylons, and Melissa George goes for the double header outfit swap. Enjoy!
