Tim Gunn Page 2
On the last episode, Nina Garcia did her best to break everyone’s spirits. This week, the designers are instructed to meet Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn at a racetrack in Washington Heights, where they learn that there will be yet another team challenge. Team challenges are such a cop out! To determine the team captains, the designers will have to race each other around the track, because why not?
As a reminder for those of us who didn’t spend the past week trembling with anticipation, this is the episode in which the contestants designed for NINA GARCIA! The woman who perfected the moue! If only they knew what they were in for!
Tragically, we missed last week’s episode, which asked the designers to create garments using materials from a New York City pet store. Olivier Green won the challenge, Joshua Christensen was eliminated after being in the bottom twice in two weeks, and Bert Keeter revealed himself to be a bit of an arrogant prig. Darn it all, Bert! Now, onto this week.
Aaah, it’s back!!! Last night on the premiere of “Project Runway’s” ninth season, 20 designers were invited to New York to pitch themselves to our beloved panel. Only 16 would survive the first round of cuts. The designers met one another for the first time at the Astor Center in SoHo (mere blocks from the Styleite offices) and did their best to set up their collections and wage psychological warfare simultaneously.
Tim Gunn has never been one to pull punches, so we shouldn’t be surprised that when he showed up for a taping of George Lopez Tonight, he came armed with lots of barbs about Snooki, the way women dress in general — and a word or two about the Secretary of State’s much-reviled pantsuits.
Lots of brands and individuals in the fashion industry have been quick to find ways to donate money to the people and institutions still reeling from the tsunami and earthquake that struck Japan last month. But strength lies in numbers, which is why we’re especially excited by the way members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America have banded together to auction off over 100 fashion-filled lots and prizes, like front row seats at fashion shows and meetings with some of our favorite designers. All of the proceeds will go to benefit The Japan Society, and we’ve included some of our favorite lots in this post. The auction started on Charity Buzz yesterday and will close on April 28th. Which lots are you bidding on?
This was the week that Fall Fashion Week started! As such, we talked to tons of cool people (Tim Gunn, Simon Doonan and Rachel Roy among them), gawked at some pretty clothes and still got our fill of gossip. Allow us to fill you in on Tom Ford, Vogue Paris, Michelle Obama and more.
Tim Gunn has hosted his fair share of fashion-forward charity events and parties over the years, but Thursday night when PETA unveiled its newest I’d Rather Go Naked ad (starring the Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson), Gunn told us that he won’t just go to any old party.
Our friends at StyleList had the chance to chat with Tim Gunn about his life, his books and his new gig with Weight Watchers. And while we’re excited that Gunn is sharing his insightful and uplifting brand of motivational speaking with people who want to live healthier lives, it’s Gunn’s comments on Anna Wintour (and who else?) that got our attention.
Everyone’s favorite quote machine Tim Gunn stopped by Conan last night to talk fashion trends and his new book, but unfortunately found his segment hijacked by the red-headed host’s bordering-on-obsessive love of jeggings.
Tim Gunn is a one-man, walking quote machine. So when we heard that the Project Runway mentor spent Sunday night giving a talk at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, we knew there’d be no shortage of gems shared. But while Gunn opened up about being bullied (both in high school and by Anna Wintour), his teenage suicide attempt, and this season of PR, the best story involves his FBI agent father, a cross-dressing J. Edgar Hoover, and Vivian Vance from I Love Lucy.
Tim Gunn certainly hasn’t been shy about sharing his thoughts these last few months, but we can’t help but wonder how Heidi Klum is going to react to the last bit of dirt Gunn’s been dishing. At a recent Kate Spade event in Pennsylvania, Gunn revealed that the Project Runway host had asked him to try to sway the judges’ vote when it came to picking the winner of season eight.
What a week, people! Gap returned to its roots, a Kardashian got naked and Karl designed an island. Plus, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry duke it out for the pop star nail polish crown. Scandalous!
We have defended Tim Gunn and his tendency not to pull punches in the past, but now he’s insulted our dear Lady Gaga and the gloves are off. OK — only half off. Because when asked what he thought of Gaga’s style, he didn’t say what she wears is categorically bad or even not aesthetically pleasing. Just that it’s not fashion.
Tim Gunn has joined the list of celebrities and public figures who’ve made videos for Dan Savage’s It Gets Better campaign. The videos are an attempt put an end to the trend, and to promote the Trevor Project, an anti-suicide hotline targeted at LGBT youth. But Gunn didn’t have such a hotline as a teen. He says when he as 17, the despair his sexuality caused him prompted him to commit suicide. He took over 100 pills and went to sleep, hoping that he wouldn’t wake up. When he did, it took a major intervention to keep him alive.
Much has been made of how “bitchy” or “catty” or “mean” Tim Gunn‘s public pronouncements have become of late, and the videos he’s recorded and posted to his Facebook page to recap each new episode of Project Runway haven’t really helped his image. The tone of the most recent of these vlogs, a 12-minute diatribe about the Jackie O. episode, is especially brusque.
We may have an unhealthy obsession with Anna Wintour, but we’re okay with that. No matter how much we read about her (or how many times we watch The Devil Wears Prada The September Issue) the all-powerful Vogue editor still fascinates us. So in the spirit of all things Anna, we bring to you this weekend’s Anna Wintour gossip roundup.
Tim Gunn has been on a roll lately — a roll which coincides nicely with the release of his book, “Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work.” And while we’ve championed his straight-shooting cause through most of this, we can’t help but think he’s started to take it too far. On Access Hollywood yesterday, Gunn set his sights on four-year-old Suri Cruise — though he foists the blame on her parents, and the insanely easy target that is Lindsay Lohan.
Do you think that if we memorized the dictionary, minded our Ps and Qs, and professed our undying love for Tim Gunn, he’d adopt us? Fashion’s most honest icon has offered up some advice (and constructive criticism) for hater-of-all-things-pants-related Taylor Momsen. Gunn recently filmed a cameo on Gossip Girl where he found Momsen’s behavior on set “pathetic” and “sad.”
The Tim Gunn-Anna Wintour fight might be one of the best fashion fueds of our history — and it only heightens the drama that it’s happening during the industry’s High Holy Days, New York Fashion Week.
